Shibi was the son of Usinara who is a famous king of Lunar dynasty and the Bhoj king of Kashi and  Madhavi who is a beautiful princess of Prathisthana and the daughter of the king Yayati. He was renowned and famous for his generosity and kindness. It is said to have saved Agni who transformed into a dove from Indra who transformed into an eagle by offering his own flesh to an eagle. His tale is very famous and is also been taught to the children. He was also a part of the famous Hindu tale Mahabharata and his story was highlighted as well.

The story of the kind Shibi Raja:
The fame of the king spread all over the worlds for being generous and kind to each and every creature. People were very happy in his kingdom as the king was always ready to help the needy ones in his kingdom. He used to take utmost care of the people and their needs. The fire God Agni and the Indra – the lord of heaven wanted to test the king Shibi as whether he is a great king or not because people thought he was a very generous and kind king. So they decide to test the king. One day, when the king was distributing charity to the people of his kingdom, the fire god Agni transformed into a dove and the god Indra transformed into an eagle. The dove came and it was shaking with fear and it came and sat on the wrist of the king. The king held the dove gently in his hand. Behind it, came the fierce eagle towards the Dove and asked the king to return the dove to it beacuse it was his prey. The king disagree to that saying that the dove came into my shelter for help and i won’t let down his trust. I help all who come to me asking for help so now its my duty to protect the dove.

The eagle told the king that it was his prey and he is hungry so return the dove so i can have my food. If you won’t return it to me , I will die with starvation and its not your duty to help me as well. The king was disappointed and said that I am ready to give you whatever food you ask for but please leave the dove as it has come in my shelter for help.

As we all know that the eagle eats meat/flesh so he said to the that alright king, you are very famous for helping all so give me your flesh in equal to the weight of the dove and I will go away.

People were standing and watching all what was happening between the king, dove and an eagle. To everyone’s surprise the king readily agreed to give his own flesh to satisfy eagle’s hunger. He ordered one of his men to get the weighing scale. The dove was placed on the one side of the scale and on the other side the king cut small piece of flesh from his thigh and placed it on the other side. But the dove was much heavier than the piece of flesh. At the end king himself sat on the other side of the scacle to offer himself to an eagle .

Both the kings were very happy to see that. So suddenly the dove and the eagle vanished and transformed into their own. The fire lord and the lord Indra gave their blessings to the Shibi Raja  and said that we had come here to test you. Now we are assured that you are truely very kind and helpful to all.
